Removal of all surveillance?

What would happen if  CCTV cameras were removed from public spaces here in the UK? What effect would it have on real crime (physically hurting someone or their property)?

Reasoning

Following the revelations by Edward Snowden that the USA and it's partners has converted the internet into a zone of mass surveillance, we now know that the government is monitoring everyone. Mass surveillance create a prison in the mind, and give the people in power a much more effective way to encourage complying with social norms. Much more effective than using force.

Does the sentence "You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide", convince you that it's ok to give up your privacy?

Is not privacy is essential to what it means to be a free human being, to have a place where we can go and be free from the judgmental eyes of other people?

Who has the power to put anyone under surveillance? Should the cameras be pointed the other way onto our secret dominators?
