Underground Anarchy

If you mention the word anarchy to someone, they may picture violent chaos. But the word simply means 'no rulers.' It does not mean no boundaries or agreements. Just no rulers.

So the question is:

What if there were no Prime Ministers, Presidents, Kings or Queens or the like? Can we live together without rulers?

Reasoning

Anarchy Today

We already have anarchy in our day to day lives. Many of the ‘institutions’ we are involved with are anarchistic. Families for example, can be run on the basis of no rulers. And synagogues, churches, temples and Mosques too, to a great degree.

But more interesting is the underground anonymous network of fellowships operating worldwide, which are anarchic. They have no rulers yet they run incredibly efficiently and powerfully throughout the world.

There are hundreds of thousands if not millions of people all over the world who are involved in this anarchy and it work brilliantly. The network is made up of dozens of different fellowships based on the Alcoholics Anonymous program.

Within each fellowship (Alcoholics anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, etc’) there are hundreds of meetings all over the world, each group being autonomous.

Here are some examples of how these fellowships have helped people in their lives. Some of them identify themselves as hard core addicts.

Some of you who listen to these may not see themselves as addicts at all or may not even believe in the concept of addiction. You do not have to have an addiction to benefit from listening to these people. Listen out for similarities rather than the differences. You will need an open mind.

Instead of having rulers, these networks have a set of agreements that members do their best to adhere to according to their understanding.

They also have a set of suggestions which members take on at their own pace in order to experience the fulfillment of the promises that this way of life has to offer.

Here are the agreements and suggestions that have been adapted from the twelve step traditions and steps.

The Thirteen Agreements

(adapted from the Anonymous Program's 12 traditions. Subject to change at any time.)

  1. Our common welfare should come first; personal evolution depends upon 'Everyone's Party' (EP) unity.

  2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – LOVE as expressed through our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

  3. Everyone is already a member of EP.

  4. Men, women and children can form small groups. Each group should remain autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or EP as a whole.

  5. Each group has but one primary purpose -- to spread freedom in the world.

  6. An EP group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the EP name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property and prestige divert us from our primary spiritual aim.

  7. An EP group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

  8. EP should remain forever non--professional, but our service centres may employ special workers.

  9. EP, as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

  10. EP has no opinion on outside issues, hence the EP name ought never be drawn into public controversy. This is because EP is just a fiction. It’s the name of a party/fellowship and thus unable to have any opinions! Our members will be unlikely to be so enlightened that they do not have opinions! But their opinions are their own.

  11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal transonymity (beyond names/ego)  at the level of press, radio, and films.

  12. Transonymity (operating beyond names/ego) is the spiritual foundation of all our agreements; ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

  13. Everything is changing. This fellowship is about freedom which means that we remember that all of the agreements above can change. We are also open to the possibility of ending this ‘experiment’ if its purpose is not being realised or if, even better, its purpose has been fully realised.

The Thirteen Suggestions

(adapted from the Anonymous Program's 12 traditions. Subject to change at any time.)

There are millions of people all over the world who have adopted them and have seen miracles occur in their lives. BUT REMEMBER - These are only SUGGESTIONS. Take them or leave them.

Imagine if those who put themselves forward to be administrators of a nation, adopted these suggestions both in private and public life?

  1. We admitted we were powerless over people and situations - that our lives had become unmanageable.

  2. Came to believe that a power greater than our egos could restore us to sanity.

  3. Made a decision to turn our will and lives over to the care of Love as we imagined it. (Another way of expressing this is 'What would love do?')

  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

  5. Admitted to Love,  to ourselves, and to another human being, the exact nature of our wrongs.

  6. Were entirely ready to have the Love remove all these defects of character.

  7. Humbly asked Love to remove our shortcomings.

  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with Love as we understood it, praying only for knowledge of Love's will for us and the power to carry that out.

  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other freedom seekers, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

  13. Having become attached to the suggestions, we remember that all attachment is an illusion and we remember that life is too important to take ourselves or anything else too seriously, including the suggestions.
